Where Shea Butter Comes From

Updated: Jul 15, 2023

While there is a lot of buzz around shea butter, I am sure you have wondered, "Where does shea butter come from?".

Shea butter is made from the nuts of karité trees in a region which stretches from West to East Africa. For generations it has been referred to as "women's gold" because it supports millions of women across the continent through work and money, in addition to its deep ivory/rich golden colour, depending on the region.

Karité fruits are harvested by women, frequently working in co-ops, using traditional methods. The butter is then extracted (by crushing the nuts), cleaned, packed, and sold locally or overseas. Shea butter can be used in cooking and is both edible and non-toxic. But the majority of its uses are in cosmetics.

All shea butter used in SHEABINTA products is organic, unrefined and 100% hand-made by West African women who have been using age old methods with zero additives, chemicals or animal testing. These women are also ensured fair wages, support for their families and development within their communities.
